Obligatorisk Tortyr: Återförödelse

I’m not a grinder, though very often find myself looking for meat. Yet the little bits and pieces of unadulterated grind that have made their way into my collection (pretty much this album and “Shift”) do bring recurrent pleasure of a specific variety. Sometimes you don’t want to listen to a nine minute plodding death/doomfest about whales having tea with Cthulu. Sometimes you don’t want to hear cheeseball lyrics about motorcycle rebels belted out over soaring 80’s solos. Sometimes you just want a bunch of songs that kung-fu kick you straight in the dick for less than a minute each. For Daem Vernon Wormer, discs like “Återförödelse” are the sonic equivalent of two nostrils full of coke and a lifeless prostitute. The cops have been called. Go for it, but make it quick!
OT and the gang go for it alright. 26 songs in under 40 minutes. What separates Sweden’s most Motörhead-obsessed resident from the typical Grindy McGee and the Grindettes fare is a healthy dose of variation. The first 11 tracks have a brighter production and a more punky, chaotic, upbeat feel to the riffs. “Slit wrists” is a killer, and the little electronic bit in “Jarnnave” is as cool as it is unexpected. Post-“Dödens svarta vingar” (Daemotranslation: dead cheese vinegar) the sound and songwriting noticeably shift into darker, more deathy terrain. According to my exhaustive research that’s cuz these later tracks were recorded in earlier sessions. I dig ye former day grindsterpieces as well (“Under ytan”, “Total katastrof” and “Skulptur” come immediately to mind), especially since the DM influence is more apparent.
Balls to the wall speed, insane musicianship, and a frantic dual vocal attack in that throaty screaming tone that seems so prevalent in Swegrind – at least in my limited experience. Take it from someone who ain’t in love with the subgenre at hand that “Afterpartyobese” rips it up. Snag a copy from Mr. Opinionated Typist himself, rip off that dead hooker’s miniskirt, and get ready to stroke the knogboner.
